Ramped Ping-Pong Table

As a ping pong player, I wondered if I could redesign the sport to make it more popular.
After exhausting potential design ideas, I started questioning everything: does the table have to be rectangular? Flat? Supported by four legs? I drew these ideas out, almost completely deviating from traditional ping pong, and ended up with an oval, curve-surfaced table supported by an arch, as if floating.
The artist in me loved the aesthetics of this creation. But the designer in me considered usability. Would the curved surface make the ball bounce unpredictably? So I built clay models of different curvatures, bounced a ball across them, and analyzed the trajectory frame by frame. I found a curvature that preserved playability while making the game more dynamic. The result balanced form and function.
